In July 1976, while the rest of the world was looking at the history books, our father—a WWII Navy veteran—was looking through the lens of a bulky Polaroid camera on the D.C. Mall.

He didn't just see George Washington as a name on a monument. He saw a General. A man of action. A leader who understood that "peace" is something you build, not something you're given.

Amidst the humidity and the Bicentennial crowds, a stranger greeted us with three words that changed everything: 

“Official fellow citizen”
